Funny? Disturbing? Both?
This might be the funniest thing I’ve read in quite a while.  From a comment thread over at MGK concerning the final Presidential debate: McCain is like if Gopher from Winnie the Pooh turned into a real person, only not in the cool way where you and Tigger have crazy antics, [but] in the way that makes you horrified that Pooh is a morbidly obese idiot savant and that Piglet is the little...

Thoughts From Septembers Past...
A NOTE FROM THE AUTHOR: I wrote this piece two years ago, although it seems like it’s been much longer.  Sadly, not much has changed since then, except now we, as a nation, are in a position to once again change the direction of our government, away from the disastrous vector of the last seven + years, and are at great risk (once again) of being duped, cowed, and intimidated into not...

The Sickness of the Right Wing Base
This, apparently, is what passes for humor amongst American “conservatives” now days: source Waterboarding, in case you didn’t know, is a form of torture consisting of restraining a person on their back, head angled downward, and pouring water over the victim’s face and into their breathing passages. In other words, when someone is waterboarded, they are drowning. ...

What I Do
I think I’ve found the perfect graphical representation of my job. The committee in my case is usually a committee of one — the boss — and at times the customers themselves (who generally wouldn’t recognize good design if their lives depended on it). source Honestly, I love my job. It’s the people I can’t stand. Which leads, inexorably,...

George.
Those who know me know of my affinity for the comedy/philosophy of George Carlin. Many of the funniest (and most wise) things I’ve ever heard or read came from him. My own sense of humor (at least the part that wasn’t shaped by my father) was formed largely by being exposed to old Carlin routines. George is gone now. The world (or at least my world) is a brighter, funnier, more...

YES WE CAN!
“America, this is our moment. This is our time. Our time to turn the page on the policies of the past. Our time to bring new energy and new ideas to the challenges we face. Our time to offer a new direction for the country we love.” -Barack Obama June 3, 2008

Robert Rauschenberg, 1925-2008
Well…damn. While he was never the first name to come to mind when I thought about my favorite artists, I think my style (or lack of one), outlook, and approach to art and art-making are probably closest to those of Robert Rauschenberg. He died of heart failure last night at the age of 82. Robert Rauschenberg 1925-2008

Stumbling Towards Obsolescence
In “The Obsolete Man”, from the second season of The Twilight Zone, a man, Wordsworth, is found to be obsolete by the State. He is secretly both religious and a librarian, and is sentenced to death, for both religion and books are illegal. He requests that his final hours be televised, and is granted a choice in his manner of execution. In his final hours, Wordsworth summons the...

Five Years
Today marks the fifth anniversary of the start of the Iraq War. I bet George W. Bush feels like such a big man, that he was able to have his very own war, just like Daddy. Was it worth it, Mr. President? The nearly 4,000 dead U.S. servicemembers? The tens of thousands more injured, both physically and mentally? The more than 100,000 dead Iraqis? The millions of displaced Iraqis? The inflammation...

I speak for a man who gave for this land Took a bullet in the back for his pay Spilled his blood in the dirt and the dust And he’s come back to say What he has seen is hard to believe And it does no good to just pray He asks of us to stand And we must end this war today With his mind he’s saying, “No more” With his heart he’s saying, “No more” With his...

Ever wonder what would happen if you took a Garfield strip and removed the titular character? John McCain says...
. A free-of-charge piece of advice to all politicians:  if you can help it, never speak after Barack Obama.  You’ll just come off sounding old and tired, and, quite possibly, anti-hope, which is never inspiring. I’ve commented before about the Sean Hannity Super Crazy Fun Time Wingnut Call-In Show. Yesterday, on said show, which is heard and mindlessly parroted by millions of people each day, Hannity called for the expulsion of Congressman Pete Stark (D-CA) from the House of Representatives. The Rebirth of a Mascot
As a follow-up to this post, the new live tiger mascot for LSU, a two-year-old Bengal/Siberian mix donated by Great Cats of Indiana and named Roscoe, was formally designated Mike VI yesterday, September 8, 2007, before the first home game of the season.  To honor Mike, the #2-ranked Tigers went out and beat the hell out of the #9-ranked Virginia Tech Hokies. Understanding how things work (or not)
Earlier today, on the Sean Hannity Super Crazy Fun Time Wingnut Call-In Show, Hannity asked a guest whether Hillary Clinton could win the Presidency. …Sgt. Pepper blew the world away. Yes, today is the fortieth anniversary of the release of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the album that, essentially, created the album (at least it’s the fortieth anniversary here in the US; in England the album came out June first, the day before). A Long Time Ago In a Galaxy Far, Far Away....
Thirty years ago today, May 25, 1977, the world changed forever. That was the day Star Wars (since re-titled Episode IV: A New Hope) opened in theaters. From that point forward, there has never been a world without Star Wars. Now, this may seem inconsequential, the anniversary of the opening of a movie. And it would be, if it were any other movie. But it isn’t, and it isn’t. This...

The Life (and Death) of Mascots
Mike V, the live Bengal tiger mascot of LSU, died last week of kidney failure. He was 17, which is within the life expectancy for a tiger. As his name would suggest, he was the fifth live mascot at LSU, and I’m sure I’m not the only fan that thought, upon hearing the news of his death, that a new mascot absolutely must be found before the start of football season. I realize two and...

Death of a preacher man
So Jerry Falwell is dead. While I take no joy in the fact that a man has died, Jerry Falwell was a vile, hateful, manipulative person. To quote L-7,...

addendum to "OOPS!"
Last night, the asshole from the previous post vetoed the military spending bill he had been sent by Congress.  So when he claims that the Democrats have kept necessary funds from the troops, don’t believe him.  If the money for the troops was that important, he could have signed that bill.  He chose not to.  Clearly it’s not that important to him.
